They went from an album that raps in basically all of the songs to an album that has some crazy and weird stuff.
It's just different from most songs you hear these days. Transistor- This song starts out with a really powerful instrumental and later in the song it switches to some reggae beat and it still sounds cool. Man, I thought I was a badass at 13 yrs old, lol.1. So, you know, I got almost a whole year of being one of those "cool kids" that was rocking 311 before anyone else was. About 8 months later "Down" blew up and 311 was everywhere. Within 48 hours, I had fallen in love with 3 songs off the Blue album, borrowed Grassroots and bought Music. To summarize - In late 95, a random skateboarder showed me 311. All they had was Music, but I was fine with that. I remember going home and begging my mom to take me to Sam Goody (ha!) so I could buy 311. It was already over, but that album hooked me for life. Who the fuck are these aliens making some of the dopest music I have ever heard? Next day, same kid comes to class and borrows me Grassroots. Then he switched it to Hive and then Purpose.
Random was the very first 311 song I ever heard. It was Random, off the self-titled/blue album. He hands me his discman and headphones and turns it to track 2.

In order to make this magic happen, I need your help! Take some time and reminisce about each 311 song, and tell me what you think of them in my survey. I also plan to see what the most loved songs are, most disliked songs, best albums, as well as some sentiment analysis of the lyrics of each "style" I find in my analysis, and of each album in general. Once I have those styles created, then I can go back and map each style to the people who answered the survey, showing what kind of fan they are. Once I collect enough data, I can factor analyze all the responses to see which songs group together, and make up different styles of 311 songs. In order to find out, I put together a survey, asking people to rate each 311 song in how much they enjoy that particular song.
